FAQ
Who is eligible to participate?
Young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who have a desire to grow in their relationship with the Lord and to learn what it means to give all that they have for Jesus.
Who runs Standing in the Gap?
Standing in the Gap is run by Kairos North America, based in Lansing, MI. James Munk is the GAP Program Director, and he and Joshua Rock oversee the Gappers who serve in Detroit. For more information about the overarching GAP program, see

What will I do as a Detroit Gapper?
You will live among the people of Detroit, building lasting relationships while sharing a common life of prayer and service. For service, you will work in all aspects of the outreach of YouthWorks-Detroit. From staffing retreats to helping to lead a youth group, from working alongside our summer youth employees to administration at a computer, your work will be quite varied.
What’s this about Ministry Training and Personal Formation?
This is the deal: if you are going to take a period of time for Standing in the Gap, we want to help you get as much from the experience as possible. We want to help you grow in your ability to serve and minister to others. We want to provide you with ongoing help and formation for your own personal and spiritual life as well. In short, we want your Gap year to be the best, most formative time of your life!
Who pays for this?
You do! That is, God will provide for you to pay for it. Standing in the Gap is a volunteer program so you will need to either raise your support or come up with your expenses some other way. Depending on your living situation and health insurance (the biggest expenses) your total costs (including fees) may be as little as $500/mo or as much as $800/mo (housing, insurance, personal, transportation, phone, etc.). There will be a program fee of around $3600 that will cover retreat costs for the year, training, and overhead for the program. You will be required to have some kind of basic health insurance. Trust Jesus, he will provide! We will work with each of you to come up with a plan for the financial side of things.
When does a Gap Year begin and end?
It is best to begin in late May and finish the following July (14 months). This gives you a chance to begin with our busy summer program, by the end of which you will be totally acclimated to the city. Then you can serve throughout the year, and end your service by helping lead the next summer program. And if you can stay for a second year, all the better! (aka stuck in the Gap!) Alternatively, you can begin in mid-August, and finish your year after the following DSO.
